Intelligent transport system for Riyadh's metro and buses

Riyadh is developing a fully integrated public transport system that connects metro and bus services, creating the foundation for sustainable urban mobility.

As one of the fastest-growing cities in the Middle East, Riyadh is driving the transformation of its public transport system. Mobility has traditionally been dominated by private cars.  With the parallel expansion of the metro and bus systems, the challenge was to integrate both modes of transportation into a seamless and reliably manageable overall system.

The Intelligent Transport System (ITS) developed by Dorsch Middle East forms the operational backbone of the multimodal transportation network and enables real-time data integration, coordinated operations management, and digitized processes. It brings together end-to-end fare management, a vehicle management system and a central Operations Control Centre into one digital system for metro and bus. Since 2014, the project has evolved from initial concept development into a fully implemented system that supports metro and bus operations across planning, implementation and live service environments.

Project Activities

Programme management and technical leadership for the development and implementation of the Intelligent Transport System (ITS), including:

  • Design and integration of the ITS core systems for metro and bus operations
  • Development of end-to-end fare management (Automatic Fare Collection, AFC)
  • Development of a vehicle management system with real-time monitoring (Automatic Vehicle Management, AVM)
  • Planning and integration of the central control centre (Operations Control Centre OCC)
  • Data-driven operations control and optimization of the multimodal transportation network

Impact

  • Integrated public transport network with six metro lines (176 km, 85 stations) and 86 bus routes covering approximately 1,900 km
  • Seamless travel through an integrated fare management system for metro and bus services
  • Continuous optimization of transit operations through the analysis of ridership, route utilization, and delays
  • Greater passenger comfort and improved travel information through live arrival updates, contactless payment options and climate-controlled stations
