Wastewater infrastructure for resource protection in Jordan
Wastewater services in Jordan are to be improved for around 90,000 people, while the reuse of treated effluent is to be expanded. This is intended to conserve water resources and reduce energy demand.
Population growth and refugee migration are placing pressure on Jordan’s scarce water resources and increasing wastewater volumes. The National Wastewater Plan therefore identifies the expansion of wastewater collection, the reduction of untreated wastewater and more energy-efficient treatment as priorities.
Dorsch Impact GmbH supports the Water Authority of Jordan (WAJ) under the Sanitation Programme: NEXUS and Resource Protection and Climate Change Mitigation Measures (CCMM). The programme extends the sewer network in Shafa Badran, rehabilitates and expands the As Salt wastewater treatment plant, and upgrades the Irbid Central and Wadi Arab wastewater treatment plants. Renewable energy and process automation complement wastewater treatment and reuse.

Project Activities
Dorsch Impact GmbH supports the Water Authority of Jordan (WAJ) in implementing the following programme components:
- Extension of the sewer network in Shafa Badran, including house connections, a pumping station and a force main
- Rehabilitation and expansion of the As Salt wastewater treatment plant with advanced nutrient removal
- Integration of anaerobic sludge digestion, gas treatment and storage, sludge dewatering and drying, combined heat and power, and photovoltaics at As Salt
- Rehabilitation of the Irbid Central and Wadi Arab wastewater treatment plants, including sludge treatment and combined heat and power
- Plant automation using programmable logic controllers (PLC) and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA)
- Integration of two small hydropower plants at Wadi Arab and As Shounna
- Reuse of treated effluent for irrigation
Impact
- Sewer connections for 50,000 people and safe wastewater reuse benefiting a further 40,000
- Energy savings of at least 10% at the upgraded As Salt wastewater treatment plant
- Up to 70% of operational energy demand at As Salt covered by renewable sources
- Planned combined capacity of approximately 3.5 MW at the Wadi Arab and As Shounna hydropower plants
- Safer reuse of treated effluent for irrigation and reduced pressure on freshwater resources
- Strengthened institutional capacity for energy-efficient and climate-smart wastewater management
